Frank Wippermann

Co-founder & CEO of MCD

Frank Wippermann is Co-founder and CEO of mcd – modern camera designs GmbH and CTO of FabuLens GmbH. He has a PhD in Physics Engineering, a lens design and micro-optics fabriction background and did his thesis at the Fraunhofer IOF in Jena, Germany.

He has been working in the field of miniaturized digital imaging systems since almost 20 years. He is also affiliated with Fraunhofer IOF, where he is working since 2004 on array cameras enabling imaging systems with reduced z-height. mcd is a design-services- and prototyping-centered SME for customized miniature imaging optics based on a proprietary lens replication technique.

This technology is currently developed to enable the low cost and high volume production of high quality imaging systems as used in endoscopy, sensing, automotive, consumer and mobile (smartphone) applications. FabuLens GmbH is a research company owned by SPRIN-D  the Federal German Agency for Disruptive Innovations - dedicated to smartphone imaging optics.  The goal is to substitute injection molding and establish high-volume production of high-quality, low-cost polymer optical components in Europe.
